Creativity for Employment & Business Opportunity (CEBO)

CEBO kicked off in the Bahamas this morning with 16 young males and females who are interested in learning new strategies to start and grow their own businesses.  CEBO is a CARICOM initiative in partnership with the Caribbean Group of Youth Business Trusts trademark Centre of Excellence for Youth Entrepreneurship.  The manual is modeled on the Barbados Youth Business Trust manual which was written by Marcia Brandon over 10 years ago and recently revised.

At the opening ceremony the Minister of Youth Hon. Dr. Daniel Johnson encouraged participants to know what they want and access the opportunities that exist to create income and self- reliance.  He wants to see  100 millionaires in the Caribbean, 10 in the Bahamas please.  Dr. Brown of CARICOM encouraged regionalism and the note that no investment in youth, could mean no CARICOM.

Marcia Brandon of the Caribbean Centre of Excellence for Youth Entrepreneurship shared the history of CEBO and noted that a recent UN report cites worsening youth unemployment of almost 74 million people in the 15-24 age group.  Job prospects are bleak. For us in the region, youth entrepreneurship is certainly one hope.  Making our young males and females employer minded, creative thinkers and effective implementers is key to the sustainable development strategy of the Caribbean region.
